O narrador deplora a sua mediocridade e os que a suportam melhor do que ele. Tityrus é a personagem que ele encontra em Virgílio e em todo lado. Tityrus aceita; o narrador, outro Tityrus, rejeita. O narrador escreve um livro, e nós lemos um livro sobre a escrita dum livro. E a narrativa continua de Tityrus em Tityrus.

O livro é tão inverosímil, tão cheio de nada, que até parece a vida real.
